>> i'm marla tellez. laura garcia-cannon is off today. what a spectacular weekend outside. let's hope it continues. good morning, ms. christina loren. how are you? >> i'm well. how are you two doing? we'll get to that later. temperatures are cold. grab your coat. it's going to be a frigid start to the day. however, what i can tell you is some cities touching on the 70s yet again. there is rain in the forecast. it looks like five consecutive days of rain. we'll tell you when that arrives in your full forecast in a couple minutes. right now back to you, jon and marla. >> i know you saw the ball game. spectacular one. champions. they are the team heading to the chance to the super bowl with a chance to prove they are now champions of the entire world. >> it was so stressful. fresh off the big win over atlanta, players arrived home late last night and dozens of fans were there to welcome home the nfc champs. the player buses returned to the

team's practice facility in santa clara about 11:45 last night. look at that homecoming. you can see fans waving to them as buses pass by. >> sharing the love out there. the players drove out so without coming out to meet the fans though a few fans we talked so they got high fives through the open windows of the cars. the coaching staff back to work this morning at the santa clara facility to start preparing for the game against the baltimore ravens in that super bowl. >> how did we get here? through a comeback win in atlanta. the niners didn't score until the second quarter. they headed to the locker room down 24-14 at the half. they scored in the third. with a little dance. in the fourth quarter, frank gore ran it in for the go-ahead touchdown. niners win 28-24. after the game players say it's a great win but their work is not done. >> we're going to enjoy it and embrace it and take advantage of it. one more game to try to win.

in d.c. yesterday. there he is sporting his kaepernick jersey. right next to mc hammer. larry is in d.c. for the presidential inauguration. we'll be talking to us later in this newscast. staying on the topic of the presidential inauguration, president obama has already taken the official oath of office. he was required to do so by sunday night. his first oath was a quiet affair at the white house. today's ceremony will be anything but quiet. more than 800,000 people are expected to attend. here's nbc's tracie potts with more. >> reporter: president obama takes the oath today. >> the last one was fast. >> reporter: they are pulling up temporary plastic this morning as hundreds of thousands witness the second inauguration of america's first black president.

over the city. 150 city blocks around the capital shut down. >> we have to be prepared for everything. that's the way we do it. >> barack obama is just getting started. >> reporter: tracie potts, nbc news washington. >> vice president biden sworn in yesterday by supreme court justice sonia sotomayor. there was a ball sponsored by the national wildlife federation and over environmental groups. as far as the first lady, she's not announced what she'll focus on in the second term but one reporter that covers the first lady says you should not be surprised if mrs. obama talks about more of a work/life balance. the first lady expected to maintain focus of her first term fighting childhood obesity and

honoring families of military service men and women. we will of course have extensive coverage of today's inauguration. both on air and online. we're streaming live video from the nation's capital at nbcbayarea.com and "today" show will start with special live coverage of that inauguration at 7:00 this morning. in other news now, and new this morning, an overnight shooting killed one person and sent another to the hospital in san francisco. police say the shooting happened on naples street just off geneva avenue in the crocker amazon neighborhood. a 43-year-old man died at the scene. a second man was taken to the hospital with what's being called not life threatening injuries. the suspected shooter was seen running away from the scene. this is the city's third homicide of the year. firefighters in san francisco searching for the cause of a two-alarm fire at an apartment building. firefighters say this one started in a three-story

apartment building on 19th and california in the city's richmond district. you can see the flames and smoke billowing out of there through the roof. it took crews 45 minutes to finally knock this fire down. we're happy to report no one was hurt but nine people have not yet been allowed to return to their homes. in south san francisco, police and fire investigators examining a suspicious fire at city hall overnight. witnesses say two dumpster fires were reported near one of the buildings in the city hall complex. one of the fires burned a fence. the other caused damage to an outbuilding used by the planning commission. firefighters managed to knock both fires down quickly. 4:39 right now. let's check back in with meteorologist christina loren to find out what's happening on this monday and beyond. good morning. >> good morning to you. happy martin luther king jr. today if you are heading out and about this afternoon because you have the day off, we tip our hats to you. it's going to be fabulous out there. if you have to go to work this morning, you want to be advised

starting tomorrow caltrans will replace fenders on that western tower that were sideswiped back on january 7th. officials say the actual pier itself sustained no damage. the fender system did its job and absorbed that impact. the repair work expected to last 4 1/2 months. the ntsb and coast guard say it could take months simply to determine the exact cause of the crash. people all over the nation and across the bay area will celebrate martin luther king day by giving back to their communities. in san mateo county, volunteers will hold a food drive for second harvest food bank along with a celebration of the arts. in oakland, cleanup events will be held at martin luther king, jr., shoreline and fruitvale district. and caltrain will host the freedom train ride from san jose to san francisco. the train leaves at 9:30 and ends with a march from san francisco's caltrain station.

also today, john carlos will join a march in celebration in pittsburgh in honor of dr. king. carlos and his teammate tommy smith made history at the summer games in 1968 with their iconic black power demonstration atop the medal podium. carlos will give a speech at a rally at pittsburgh high school today at noon. it is 4:42 right now. still ahead, getting assistance from an app. the high tech help that could be coming for thousands of bay area's low income residents. so long sacramento. the announcement coming today that could mean the kings are moving their castle north.

bay area activists are using a high-tech approach to help low-income families in san francisco. the peace corps for geeks will build an app to help families connect to unused public assistance benefits. the group says the app will help cut red tape to get money to those in need. the city will help pay for the programmers who will create the program. the project is expected to be completed by this spring. today was long rumored expected to become official.

the sacramento winkings looking lock in a deal and move it to seattle. majority owners expected to announce they completed terms to sell controlling interest to chris hanson and microsoft ceo steve ballmer. the franchise right now valued at 525 million. the new owners expected to move the team to seattle and then rename them the supersonics. any deal would still have to be approved by nba owners and league officials. staying on the topic of buying things, there's a reason it's called a retail therapy. today is often referred to as blue monday and some consider it the most depressing day of the year. many will be turning to shopping to cope with their mood. more than a third of americans say winter is the season they most likely shop to make themselves feel better according to an online coupon survey. 9 out of 100 say they feel

you get a show with those large waves. wednesday into thursday things change. we get our first round of showers. not expecting much. the heavier rain arrives as we get into this weekend. saturday, sunday, monday, tuesday and wednesday looking to be wet and much colder. like i said before, enjoy the warmth while it lasts. back to you, jon and marla. >> thanks so much. 4:49. new this morning, a better idea of how deadly the hostage situation at an algerian natural gas plant is. new video emerged showing a video outside of the facility with bullet holes. a security official now says 81 people have been killed including 32 islamist militants but those numbers have not been confirmed. at least one american is believed to be among the dead. almost two dozen foreign workers are still unaccounted for. algerian troops stormed the plant on saturday following a four-day standoff with militants holding hostages at that plant. law enforcement agents from

around the bay and across the country coming together today to honor a fallen brother. funeral services being held for an officer for the gulf police department killed in the line of duty last week. he was well known among officers in the bay area as an ambassador to canine teams and often raised money to provide police dogs with bulletproof vests. officers from all over the bay area expected to attend this funeral in roseville near sacramento taking place this morning. the person many believe was behind the hoax of manti te'o may soon tell the story. he'll met with his family and an attorney this week to talk about how to address the bizarre prank. he allegedly created a fake online profile of a woman named lennay kekua. te'o says he was told kekua died of leukemia in september.

an investigation later revealed kekua never existed. te'o said that the man has apologized to him privately. te'o gives his first tv interview this week. he's going to speak to katie couric in an interview set to air on her daytime talk show on thursday. online dating service match.com slapped with a $10 million lawsuit by one of its users. a las vegas woman accusing the company of setting her up with a man who brutally attacked her. police say that attack happened back in january 2011, just a few months after the woman had broken off that relationship. police say the suspect hid in her garage and stabbed her repeatedly over their failed match. he was later arrested. a month after that in connection with a separate murder case involving a girlfriend. making the bad even worse. a new study offering another big reason to limit your children's

some of the most common chronic illnesses in kids. a new study of 500,000 children in 50 different countries links fast food to worsening symptoms of asthma, hayfever and eczema. researchers say they were surprised to discover the study's findings were consistent worldwide. >> it is an enormous survey. it is quite impressive and consistent with other surveys that have been done in the past several years. >> researchers also found children who ate fruit three times a week showed a reduction in the severity of symptoms. the study attributes improvement to the high level of antioxidants in fruits and vegetables. >> along with a 49ers victory, how about the mavericks competition in the books. >> two dozen showed off their

moves on waves that reached up to 25 feet right here half moon bay. thousands gathered to watch the competition unfold on the jumbotron. looks like a gorgeous day. for the first time ever, fans were prohibited from watching the action from mavericks beach itself after a rogue wave injured several spectators during the last contest. fans say they were disappointed but they made the best of it. >> watching it here on the jumbotron is not the same. it's here. it's mavericks. it's how you need to see it. make the best out of it and enjoy it for what it is. >> they call it the super bowl of surfing. kind of nice to be here and be part of it. >> it's much safer that way. now this year's winner was santa cruz native peter mel. his first mavericks win after a decade of competition. >> congratulations there. it appears one of the ocean's most dangerous predators is not even a match for a determined 62-year-old grandfather.

that grandfather, a british tourist vacationing in australia. spotted a shark near the beach. a news crew happened to be rolling there as the 62-year-old and another man rushed into the water and grabbed a shark by the tail. they managed to wrestle it away before it could reach kids that were playing there. see you later, buddy. beat it. the two pushed the shark back out toward the open water. nobody was injured. we're happy to say it looks like the shark is back to where it belongs. >> he was interviewed like that. news crew was there. >> instant hero.
